"Dumari ja Spuget"

Finland’s musical stalwart Tuomari Nurmio and his band perform new and old songs celebrating Helsinki.

The 1812 appointment of Helsinki as Finland’s capital prompted the rapid growth of the city’s population. Finnish, Swedish and Russian were all spoken on the streets, turning Helsinki into a veritable Tower of Babel that was to give rise to Stadin slangi, the city’s own distinctive form of slang and a unique cultural phenomenon in Finland. It is as if the slang captures the city’s very soul.
