Pihlajamäki 50 years!

The first residents moved to Pihlajamäki, in north-eastern Helsinki, in 1962, making 2012 a 50th anniversary year for the purpose-built suburb.

imageThe suburb overlooking a rocky landscape was first inhabited in 1962. The new neighbourhood was designed around natural shapes: rocks, foliage and vistas.

The tower blocks and apartment buildings were built on the hills, and the roads respected natural formations.  Each house in Pihlajamäki was designed to be exactly where it is. The neighbourhood is protected in order to preserve the 1960s look and spaciousness.

Of course, Pihlajamäki has much more to offer that award-winning architecture: old wooden houses, an edgy shopping-centre, the river bank, woods and birds, blues and garden parties, terraced houses, football, beautiful parks, tennis courts, modern buildings, forest paths and landscapes.image

Above all, people and life.

Pihlajamäki is handsome, down-to-earth, lovable and full of surprises. 50 years.

On Saturday 8 September, the jubilee year culminates in the “I love Pihlis” day.
